Senator Susan Collins recently met with the owner and founder of Look’s Gourmet Food Company of Whiting, Michael Cote, who was in Washington, D.C. to be honored as the second runner-up for U.S. Small Business Administration Person of the Year. His life and business partner, Cynthia Fisher, also attended the ceremony.

Cote has been in the food service industry since purchasing a Pepperidge Farm bakery distributorship shortly after graduating high school. After years of climbing the ranks to VP of Alternate Channels at Pepperidge Farm and later as Sr. VP of Sales and Operations at Odwalla/Fresh Samantha, Cote used his personal savings and additional financing provided by local banks and backed by the SBA to buy the assets of the A. M. Look Canning Company, which was on the brink of foreclosure in 2003.  In the company’s nine-year existence, Cote has managed to expand distribution of the Bar Harbor brand into more than 30% of U.S. retail grocery with additional international distribution into Canada, Japan and Europe.  Cote has continually created economic opportunities for his fellow Mainers and Look’s Gourmet Food Company currently employs 26 people in rural Washington County Maine.
