Many reports have repeatedly stated that consumers are overwhelmed by the task of making better food choices. More consumers read nutrition labels for guidance, but find that the task is still more complicated than it should be. New England retailer Hannaford Supermarkets recently implemented a new system to help shoppers make healthier choices, and so far it appears that consumers are appreciative of the help.

Hannaford began the program, called "Guiding Stars", in their stores one year ago. The program puts one, two or three Stars on packages to signify how healthy the particular food is, corresponding to "good", "better" or "best" nutritional levels. The company reports that consumers have been using the guidance and overwhelmingly make healthier choices since the chain implemented the labels store-wide. However, not all foods receive Stars; foods that do not include coffee, tea, spices, bottled water, and foods with fewer than five calories per serving, because they do not contain a significant source of nutrients. Foods that do not meet minimum nutritional criteria also do not receive Stars.
