The 2011 Summer Fancy Food show held in Washington, D.C., was the perfect venue to show off the incredible quality, value, and convenience of Bar Harbor products this week. Held, in the cavernous Walter E. Washington Convention Center, over 2,400 specialty food vendors lined up in a dizzying maze of aisles that stretched even the most experienced foodies’ stomachs and imaginations. Food retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers, along with members of the press and trade associations had an opportunity to sample more than 180,000 different food products that literally spanned every category from soup to nuts.

Even amongst such stiff competition for attention, Bar Harbor products consistently stood out from the crowd. Whether it was a gourmet retailer who walked up to our booth confessing, “I’m trying to limit how much I eat today, but I just can’t resist your chowder”, or a member of the trade turning to a colleague, and exclaiming, “Oh gosh, you HAVE to try these sardines!”,  Bar Harbor products impressed everyone who tasted them.

We introduced show attendees to several new ways that Bar Harbor products can be used to make gourmet meals in minutes. Favorites included our fresh and easy Lobster Mango Salad that takes any cocktail or tapas party to the next level, and Clam Chowda Pizza that makes the perfect starter or main course at a casual backyard gathering -- especially when you prepare it on the grill! And for a delicious finish to any meal, our easy exclusive recipe for Indian Pudding with Creme Anglaise!

We received many compliments on the versatility of each of our products, which are all ready to use at a moment’s notice straight out of the pantry. However, we are most proud of our customers’ recognition and appreciation for the distinctive quality of our products. A name like Bar Harbor comes with high expectations for freshness and quality, and as we heard from attendees over the course of three days, great memories of dockside dining on the best seafood on the east coast. So, we were delighted to hear from visitors that our classic Chowders and Bisques “brought them right back to Maine”, and that our Whole Maine Cherrystone Clams were the “best clams I've ever had”.

And, surprisingly, the runaway hit of the show was the newest addition to our line of shelf-stable fish; Smoked Sardine Fillets in Maple Syrup. The combination of the hardwood smoke and maple glaze makes this high-protein fish a sweet and savory snack, or the perfect nutrition-conscious replacement for traditional breakfast meats. Many customers remarked on the delicate, flaky nature of the meat, which stood in stark contrast to childhood memories of greasy, over-salted fish lingering in the back of their cupboards. In fact, many patrons were delighted with the quick Wild Herring Salad that we offered as a low-mercury and nutrient-rich (Omega-3, calcium, Vitamin D) alternative to tuna fish salad.

We were thrilled to be able to expand distribution of our all-natural, sustainable-caught seafood at this summer’s Fancy Food Show. Be sure to check your local store shelf, or contact us at info@barharborfoods.com, to find out how you can snag the high quality seafood that Bar Harbor brings to you—“Fresh Off the Docks of Maine”!
